Macular Degeneration (AMD): Protecting Your Central Vision (ম্যাকুলার ডিজেনারেশন)

Have you noticed a blurry or dark patch right in the centre of your vision, while everything to the sides still looks fine? Trouble recognising faces, or straight lines that suddenly seem wavy? These can be early signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) — in Bangla, ম্যাকুলার ডিজেনারেশন — a leading cause of central vision loss in older adults. The good news: knowing the signs early helps you protect your sight.

What is macular degeneration? (ম্যাকুলার ডিজেনারেশন কী?)

The macula is the small central part of your retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision — reading, recognising faces, and fine detail. In AMD, the macula gradually gets damaged with age, blurring the centre of your vision while your side (peripheral) vision usually stays intact.

Early warning signs

  • A blurry or dark spot in the centre of your vision
  • Straight lines looking wavy or bent
  • Colours appearing dimmer than before
  • Difficulty reading or recognising faces
  • Needing brighter light for close work

The two types

Dry AMD is the most common form; it develops slowly over years. Wet AMD is less common but more serious and can cause rapid vision loss — a sudden change needs urgent care. Only an eye doctor can tell them apart.

Who is most at risk?

  • Age 50 and above
  • Smoking — one of the biggest controllable risks
  • A family history of AMD
  • High blood pressure and an unhealthy diet

How to protect your vision

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Eat for your eyes — leafy greens, colourful vegetables, and fish (see foods for healthy eyes).
  • Protect against UV with good sunglasses, and control your blood pressure.
  • Have regular eye exams, especially after 50 — the earlier AMD is found, the more sight you can save.

When to see a doctor

See an eye specialist promptly if you notice new central blurriness, dark spots, or straight lines turning wavy. A sudden change in central vision is an emergency and needs urgent attention. AMD is part of a wider group of age-related eye conditions — see our eye-care checklist by age.

Look after your eyes at every age: comfortable, up-to-date glasses help too. Try a pair at home with Nine Optic’s free home try-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can macular degeneration be cured?

There is no full cure, but treatment (especially for wet AMD) can slow or stabilise it. Early detection through regular eye exams is key to protecting your vision.

Does AMD cause complete blindness?

AMD affects central vision but usually spares side vision, so it rarely causes total blindness. However, it can seriously affect reading and recognising faces.

How can I lower my risk of AMD?

Don’t smoke, eat a diet rich in leafy greens and fish, protect your eyes from UV, control blood pressure, and have regular eye exams after 50.

At what age does macular degeneration start?

It most commonly affects people aged 50 and above, with risk rising as you get older, especially for smokers and those with a family history.
